Not too long ago I was introduced to the avocado. Oh, I’d heard of them, and seen them in pictures, but I couldn’t recall ever meeting one face to face. I’d heard of guacamole but had never seen it in real life. Not long ago I had my first avocado toast – yummy but messy – I wore it! And TODAY I heard about Avocado Butter. Folks – this fits in KETO.
Maybe I should back up a bit.
See, in 1979 we came to Texas for the first time to visit my sister and her husband, a born and bred Texan who had peanut butter and jalapenos AT EVERY MEAL. One day, he took us to a Tex-Mex restaurant.
To set the stage, we were 19 at the time. Had never been to a Mexican-type restaurant. Had barely ever been off of Delmarva.
We were green. Like an avocado, come to think of it.
Being two of the ‘sensitive stomach’ variety, we can stop that story here. I call it the Mexi-cleanse.
And that’s why I’d never had avocado. Guacamole=Tex-Mex=cleanse. The memory is long, folks

What is Avocado Butter?
I asked my daughter if she’d ever heard of Avocado Butter and she said, “It’s what – avocados and butter?”
Errrr…. sort of.
At the heart of it, Avocado Butter is a compound butter, which is a butter to which other herbs and seasoning have been added. In this case, we’re using the avocado as the additive with the seasonings.
And it’s like the best Keto fat bomb ever!
Avocado Toast needs a bread with substance and a beer belly to keep it from falling in your lap or, heaven forbid, into your bra. Avocado Butter is a lovely spread that’s perfect for things like 60-second Mug Bread or Cloud Bread or Keto Bagels. Use it as a condiment for a low carb wrap or on your eggs. Or on cooked Zoodles – or Dreamfields Pasta if it fits into your plan and your body doesn’t respond negatively to it.
Make bagel chips from Keto Bagels and use them – or raw vegetables – for dipping.
Thin some of it out with cream or avocado oil to make a dressing for your salad.
It also is a great addition to vegetables and meats to raise your fats – like some of the chicken recipes in this post.
I’m daydreaming about splitting an avocado and filling both halves with this stuff! Overkill much?
How Would I Make Avocado Butter?
Normally this would be the time to tell you the chemistry and makeup of the ingredients and how the combination of them will create a reaction unparalleled in this universe.
Oh, who am I kidding? I’ve never done that.
If you’ve read any other posts here you know I cook by the feel method. If I feel like my cooking will kill someone I might not cook.
My experiments haven’t killed anyone yet but I’ll admit to having a few meals with the family and getting uncertain looks (and the time even the dog refused to eat it) and even a few, “Does this have a funky taste to you?” and we won’t even mention the time a stranger stopped by the house to see if I needed the fire company because I was ‘grilling’.
“No, sir, but thanks. I’m doing a charcoal experiment.”
“But you are using a gas grill.”
“Yes. I am MAKING charcoal.”
It was so bad the pastor wouldn’t eat it.
Anyway, I digress.
If it were me, I’d take an avocado and eyeball an equal size amount of softened whipped butter, and toss them into the food processor. Since y’all are more discerning cooks I’ll do a nice round number of 7 recipes below so you don’t feel like your on a high wire without a net.
Tips For Making Avocado Butter
Be sure your butter (if it’s your base with avocado) is soft.
Don’t lock yourself into certain herbs, or even fresh ones. Feel free to substitute dry for fresh, and any herb for another.
This won’t stay good, even in the fridge, for more than a few days. Use it up quickly, or freeze some of it. If you roll it into logs and put it in the fridge it will be nice and firm for slicing.
The recipes with an acid – lemon juice or lime juice – may keep longer in the fridge.
Some REAL Recipes For Avocado Butter
I know you want them!
And, of course, there will be seven of them ‘cuz that’s my jam.
Here’s a super basic recipe from Delish by Lena Abraham for Avocado Butter. Nothing fancy and probably all the ingredients in your kitchen right now! I love the photo and, since I’m not finding any of these recipes on actual Keto sites, we’re deciding that it’s spread on low carb or Keto bread here
I don’t know about you, but I absolutely adored Alton Brown during the Good Easts years. It was like watching a weird science food production. I couldn’t do this post without including his Avocado Compound Butter! I promise he won’t show up to sabotage you.
The Avocado Butter recipe from Cooking on the Weekends has pictures that are so beautiful I just want to stare at them. Seriously, how does she do that? So beautiful! I can’t wait to try it.
This Avocado Butter from Catching Seeds doesn’t use any butter at all! It does use cheesy-tasting Nutritional Yeast, though.
And here’s ANOTHER butter-free Avocado Butter from Trim Down Club – with a little hot sauce!
Mmmm! Here’s a Garlic Avocado Butter from Make the Best of Everything – a beautiful green!
I really think I’ve saved the best for last. This one is a real meal and looks soooo good! From a Chef’s Kitchen – I present Shrimp in Avocado Butter! It reminds me of a dish I loved years ago – not one I’ll link to because it came from a box in the freezer section and really wasn’t at ALL good for me – but this one is!
So what do you think? Any of these look good to you?
